According to data from IntoTheBlock, looking at the trading volume of NFTs, we can notice some stagnation since July. The level of activity in trading is essentially static, so the data begs the question of whether trading is gearing up for a recovery or if this is the new normal.

Market overview: from peaks to flat lines
According to IntoTheBlock, NFT trading has seen a sharply fluctuating pattern through the end of 2023. Further, in mid- and early 2024, trading volumes increased significantly in March. However, since July the market has shown clear signs of leveling off. As the chart shows, the price for the NFT market has remained somewhat consistent over the past quarter, even though there have been occasional fluctuations in daily trading volume.
The overall volume line is almost horizontal; it shows active trading volumes in the $0-$20 million range, a far cry from their previous highs. This relative calm is cause for concern regarding the overall development of the NFT market.
A temporary pause or a new normal?
This can be viewed in more than one way. Firstly, this could be due to the cyclical market behavior characteristic of a developed industry, where phases of high volatility alternate with phases of stability. There was a hype for NFTs in the first half of 2024 due to innovation and new use cases, but now that doesn’t seem to be the case anymore.
On the other hand, this stability could also be the result of the market reaching a new level of maturity. This change could also indicate that the non-fungible token market is becoming increasingly sophisticated, with institutional participants and real money investors dominating it.
Future Outlook: What’s next for NFTs?
The NFT market is still highly speculative, but the leveling off trend could mean a more sustainable market in the future. There will be less speculative trading, and NFTs can be used outside of art and collectibles, such as gaming, real estate or DeFi.
Finally, whether this stagnation is temporary or a return to a new normal will depend on the performance of the non-fungible token over the coming months.
