Avail and Lens are working together to revolutionize onchain social media with new technology

  • Avail’s partnership with Lens aims to transform social media by increasing scalability and user control on decentralized networks.
  • The collaboration between Lens Protocol and Avail will enable more open, user-centric social apps by integrating advanced data solutions.
  • With Avail DA, Lens Protocol supports high transaction volumes, making decentralized social networks more efficient and resilient.

Avail Project has announced a partnership with Lens Protocol, with the aim of transforming social media in the chain. This partnership aims to advance a vision of an open and fair internet by improving user-facing social apps like hey and orb. Avail DA’s robust data availability solution will power the Lens Protocol, allowing it to handle the high transaction throughput essential for social networking.

We envision an open and fair internet. @LensProtocol is playing a huge role in bringing that vision to life by revolutionizing on-chain social media, one of the most impactful aspects of today’s internet.

That’s why we’re working with Lens to advance this mission!

Addressing centralization and data challenges

Currently, social networks generate enormous amounts of data, including posts, likes, comments and connections. Traditional centralized systems manage these interactions, but often at the expense of user control.

Consequently, most online social activity takes place within the confines of a few large companies. However, such centralized control is increasingly criticized for limiting user participation and monetization.

To address these issues, Lens Protocol integrated with ZKsync’s ZK stack to efficiently scale the execution layer. Yet managing and storing transaction data remains a challenge. Posting all transaction data on Ethereum is economically infeasible for social networks, even with improvements like EIP-4844. Therefore, Avail DA provides a critical solution by connecting ZKsync and Ethereum, allowing Lens to build a modular blockchain with improved throughput at a lower cost.

Improving efficiency and user experience

Additionally, Avail DA integration allows Lens to support social apps with greater efficiency and resilience. By opening social networks at the protocol level, Lens allows users to communicate across apps while maintaining their connections and social capital.

This approach represents a shift from traditional models. For example, if a platform like Instagram were to impose additional fees to reach followers, users could seamlessly switch to an alternative app that offers more freedom.

Lens Protocol founder Stani Kulechov emphasized the importance of a scalable and resilient network. According to Kulechov: “Our goal is to create a network that ensures participation and transparency, supports ownership and opens up new use cases.” Lens’ choice of Avail DA aligns with this vision and provides a future-proof data availability solution that integrates seamlessly with the ZK stack.

The partnership is poised to benefit developers and users. With over half a million users and 40 million transactions already on Lens, the upcoming Avail DA integration in Q4 2024 will improve functionality and scalability. This partnership marks a critical advancement in decentralized social technology, providing a unified Web3 foundation that promises to reshape the landscape of online social interactions.
